30: Setting Boundaries with Social Media and Creating Opportunities for Yourself with Milou Pietersz
How to Set Social Media Boundaries Without Sacrificing Your Growth — Lessons from Milou Pietersz
Social media is a double-edged sword. It can be the spark that fuels your dreams—or the fire that burns you out.
In episode 30 of Broads Podcast, I sat down with Milou Pietersz, social media strategist and founder of Simply Multimedia, to talk about how she built her brand with boundaries. She’s not just creating content—she’s creating a life that aligns with her values, energy, and vision.
And honestly? Her approach is a breath of fresh air in an online space that’s constantly yelling more, faster, louder.
Let’s break down the wisdom she shared—and how you can apply it today.
From Uber Eats to Unapologetic Entrepreneur
Milou’s story is what happens when hustle meets heart. After earning her degree in Media, Advertising, and Public Relations, she found herself delivering food for Uber Eats while figuring out her next move. Not exactly what she imagined for herself post-grad, but it gave her space to reflect and recalibrate.
What happened next? She launched her business, Simply Multimedia—a digital agency that now supports aligned clients and lets her work on her own terms. She leaned into her passion for social media and created a career rooted in connection and creativity.
This wasn’t just a business pivot. It was a personal one.
Redefining Your Identity After Sports (Or Any Major Life Shift)
Milou was a Division 1 tennis player for most of her life. But once college ended, so did that chapter. Like many athletes, she faced the big question: Who am I without my sport?
Instead of getting stuck, she used the discomfort as fuel. We talked about how crucial it is to let go of old identities so you can step into new versions of yourself—whether that’s as a creative, a founder, or just a person giving herself permission to change.
This resonated deeply. So many of us—especially women—tie our worth to a single role or phase. But growth demands reinvention.
Social Media Can Be a Tool, Not a Trap
We’ve all heard the social media horror stories: burnout, comparison, trolls, addiction. But what if you could use it intentionally, with boundaries that actually protect your peace?
Milou doesn’t just teach this—she lives it. She built her entire business on social, yet she’s quick to log off when it starts feeling heavy.
Her tips?
Mute, block, unfollow. You don’t owe anyone access to your energy.
Schedule your time online. Just like workouts or meetings, create intentional windows for posting and scrolling.
Get clear on your “why.” Are you posting to prove something—or to connect, share, and grow?
Boundaries aren’t limitations. They’re your superpower.
Creating Opportunities Instead of Waiting for Permission
Milou didn’t wait for the perfect job or invitation. She created her own path.
We dove into how women, especially BIPOC women, are often taught to wait until we’re “ready” or “qualified” before taking up space. Milou flipped that script. She started before she had it all figured out, trusting that momentum would create clarity.
If you’ve been holding back from launching something—whether it’s a side hustle, a social media page, or your own business—this is your sign to just start. There’s no perfect moment, just the one you choose.
Community Over Competition
Something that stood out in our convo was Milou’s emphasis on community. She doesn’t see social as a platform to chase clout—she sees it as a place to find aligned people and co-create.
Whether it’s collaborations, referrals, or support, her message was clear: When you build relationships before you need them, you build something that lasts.
This is especially relevant for women building brands in the wellness or creative space. The more you lift others up, the more magnetic you become.
Align Your Life Before You Design Your Feed
If you’ve ever felt drained, pressured, or disconnected from your own online presence, let Milou’s story remind you: It’s never too late to realign.
You don’t have to post every day. You don’t have to follow every trend. And you definitely don’t have to sacrifice your mental health for growth.
Your business, your goals, your brand—these should serve you. Not the other way around.
Let’s Talk:
What boundaries have you set (or want to set) with social media?
Drop a comment, or share this blog with someone who needs a reminder that they’re allowed to protect their peace and pursue their dreams.
Here’s to building your dream life—one intentional choice at a time.
